What sets Icelandic eiderdown apart from other natural and synthetic products? Beyond its scientifically proven insulating properties and traceability of every Icelandic eiderdown product, the history of eiderdown cultivation in Iceland makes it a truly unique resource.

Recognizing the importance of the mutually-beneficial relationship between humans and animals, Iceland declared the eider a fully protected species in 1847 to ensure the eider's continued safety while nesting in Iceland. 

Over time, Icelandic eider farmers took it upon themselves to preserve eiders" nesting areas. They constructed shelters to augment the ducks' comfort and to protect their nesting areas from predators to encourage their return each year. This relationship is rare and unique between people and birds. 

Compared with feathers found in mass-produced bedding and outerwear, eiderdown is harvested in a very sustainable process that benefits the birds and supports the survival of their colonies. Icelandic eider farmers will only harvest down from nesting areas once the birds are no longer using it. It's a symbiotic relationship that benefits eider populations and farmers alike.
